Severe weather will appear on Friday in western, central and
southern Greece. The deep cyclone Cassilda as it was named, has a pressure of
998 mb, and is predicted to reach 990mb tomorrow morning. Cassilda is expected
to cause severe thunderstorms and winds up to 10 Beaufort. It seems that
Cassilda has developed to Mediterranean cyclone (medicane) although the
conditions are not very favorable due to the strong wind shear. The sea surface
temperature reaches 28 C at Ionian Sea and it’s about 2 degrees above than the
average of the season. This can play a critical role at the strengthening of
the cyclone in combination with the upper level trough in Italy which can cause
the appropriate conditions for the medicane. The main characteristic of these
systems is the warm core, the “eye” in the center, and the absence of fronts.
In medicanes, near the “eye” are developed strong thunderstorms with strong
winds.
In more details, for every Friday is expected bad weather at the Ionian
islands, Peloponnese and the western parts of continental Greece. The
thunderstorms are expected very severe and floods are possible.
The winds at Ionian Sea will blow from northwest exceeding 10 Beaufort,
with gusts at 12 B. The temperature will drop, reaching 30 C at northern parts, 27 C at western and 24 C at the Cyclades islands and Crete.
The bad weather will continue on Saturday while the cyclone will move southern, towards Crete and Cyclades. During the night of Saturday will weaken and it's pressure is predicted to reach 1005 mb.
