AT LEAST 46 people died as two days of heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in south-east Brazil.

A further 17 were listed as missing after the downpours forced 2,600 people to leave Minas Gerais.

Some of the deaths were in the state’s capital Belo Horizonte, which saw nearly 7in of rain in 24 hours, a record for the last 110 years. Homes on hillsides were reduced to ruins as the ground beneath them crumbled away.

State governor Romeu Zema was due to fly over affected areas to evaluate the damage. He declared an emergency in 47 cities, a measure that should trigger federal disaster aid.

More deluges were expected in the state and other parts of Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
